Kinds of Fixed Orthodontic Tools

One of the most typical orthodontic tools used are braces, which are made up of bands, wires and/or brackets. Bands are fastened around the tooth or teeth and used to hold the tool/s in place. Brackets on the other hand are usually attached to the front of the tooth. Arch wires are passed through the brackets and fastened to the bands. Firmly fixing the arch wire in place puts pressure on the teeth slowly moving them to their correct position. Braces are normally adjusted every month to achieve the best results which could be within months or years. Modern braces are smaller, lighter and show less metal than the early ones. They are now available in colorful choices for kids and adults as well.

The Right Bite

The most common oral health issue prompting orthodontic treatment is a bad bite or scientifically called a malocclusion. There are one or more factors that may cause this like having a small mouth limiting the amount of space for the teeth to grow. Tongue thrusting is another factor that the can result in the protrusion of the teeth. Bite can be affected by having many teeth or not enough teeth. Misaligned jaw or supporting bone structure can affect the bite and may result in difficulty chewing and speaking. Lastly, poor muscular functional habits such as thumb sucking during infancy can be a detriment to dental and facial development.Computer-aided technology offered through some orthodontic offices today helps the orthodontist to create ideal tooth positions for that perfect bite.

No no for tooth extraction

Dentists and orthodontists used to pull out teeth to give way to dental implants which they say were more stable than natural teeth, but current failures suggest the opposite that the natural teeth structure if stable enough can give better stability opposed to total implants. There are also increasing cases of crowding which results from teeth extraction which has existing teeth move in anyway further complicating procedures that have already been carried out. Crowding can result in significant weakening of the bony structure which in turn can prevent further attempts to exact changes. Implant failure due to clinical mobility is one of the most prevalent conditions associated with dental implants and they are undergoing studies and revisions to procedures to correct and possibly prevent such cases from happening early on.

Adult Braces

Braces are often associated with a teenager’s rite of passage but today, more and more people are getting braces as adults, sometimes along with their teenage children. Orthodontic treatment for adults are more complicated than teens; the latter has jaw bones that are easier to correct while adults have already had their mature teeth and dental problems for decades. In some serious cases, some patients have to go through jaw surgery along with their orthodontic treatment. The most popular kind of braces for adults are called fixed braces. No matter what your age is, this type of braces needs 9 to 30 months before results are achieved. Adults will also have to wear retainers longer than teenagers do.

Food to Avoid While Wearing Braces

65.jpg

If you’re wearing braces, your diet is definitely going to change so you don’t damage any of the brackets on your mouth. The most obvious type of food to stay away from are the hard, sticky ones like gum, chocolate bars, and candy. Besides getting stuck in between the bars, they can also cause tooth decay. Some other food to avoid eating regularly are hard steak, corn on the cob, bagels, raw hard vegetables, hard tacos, and potato chips. It might be difficult to remove them out of your diet but if you damage your braces, you are basically prolonging your treatment time. If you’d like fast braces treatment, follow a diet of softer food to make sure that your teeth and braces stay in prime condition during treatment.

Broken Appointments

nurse2.jpg

Missed a dental check-up appointment or had it rescheduled the next day? Such situation is called a broken appointment. It is important that you inform the secretary of your orthodontist twenty four (24) hours before the scheduled appointment to allow other waiting patients to use the time. Be human enough to reschedule your appointment in a good manner. If you wish to take it after office hours, you better leave the necessary details and confirm.

If you keep on cancelling appointments, this will prolong you or your child’s treatment. The dental clinic cannot monitor your child’s development due to a large number of clients.

We have several ways that orthodontics can be used to help improve the way that a patient’s teeth align. When our parents were teenagers, it used to be that metal, obvious and often painful braces were the only solution to this type of problem.

Today, the products are much more easier to use. The braces are less difficult to care for and they are better looking. Some brace products such as Invisalign, are able to go unnoticed, too. Another thing, many people of all ages can get this type of help from kids to teens to adult. This means that you can take care of the overbite that you have.. It’s never too late!
